EV Charging Stations in Shopping Centers

A growing number of ev store drivers are visiting retail locations specifically to charge their vehicles. This provides an opportunity for shopping center owners to increase brand loyalty and attract new customers – especially if the charging stations are conveniently located and easy to find.

EV chargers can be installed in a wide range of stores, from convenience retailers to grocery stores and big box retailers. Regardless of the store type, installing chargers is a great way to show a commitment to sustainability and support environmental initiatives that may be important to an EV owner.

According to Consumer Reports, c-store chains are leading the way in terms of offering EV charging, with Sheetz and Wawa tops among national brands with over 10% of their sites equipped with chargers. Other regional c-store chains like Maverik, Caseys and Royal Farms have also made headway with the technology.

In the c-store space, most chargers are DC fast charge ports, which provide a faster recharge than Level 2 chargers and allow EV owners to get back on the road in less time. The number of DC fast chargers is expected to grow dramatically as more electric cars are sold and the need for speedier charging becomes even more critical.

The specific amenities a retailer offers with its EV charging stations will vary, but some locations use the technology to generate revenue by placing chargers in fee-based parking garages or other gated areas, or simply by charging for electricity delivered. Others use a more casual approach, offering free charging for a shorter period and then requiring a fee for longer stays.
